Building on the strengths of Research Medical Center’s existing program, Midwest Cancer Care at Research Medical Center offers each patient a full range of treatment options and services including a new outpatient facility, a dedicated inpatient oncology unit and unparalleled specialized expertise. Midwest Cancer Care at Research Medical Center is recognized for excellence in treatment of: breast cancer, head and neck cancers, gastrointestinal cancers, genetic counseling, gynecologic cancers, and liver, pancreas and biliary tract cancers. We use state of the art technology including IMRT, IGRT (OBI and CBCT) Respiratory Gating, HDR, Prostate Seed Implants, Image Guided Brachytherapy OR Suite, CT Simulator, and Electronic Medical Record. The radiation oncologists who practice here include John Sheldon, MD, Jay Robinow, MD and David Shaeffer, MD.

SCHEDULING – When scheduling an appointment for a new patient visit, simply call 816-276-4700 and inform the operator that you would like to make an appointment. You will be connected with an Intake Coordinator who will gather all of the necessary information prior to your visit. This person will assist with any questions that you may have prior to your visit.

WHERE TO GO – Midwest Cancer Care is located on the campus of Research Medical Center, 2316 E. Meyer Blvd., in Kansas City, Missouri. It is convenient to 71 Highway. You will need to use the Midwest Cancer Care entrance located on the west side of the Research Medical Center, off Meyer Blvd. There is a dedicated entrance and parking for Midwest Cancer Care.

PRACTICAL ISSUES

PARKING: Midwest Cancer Care is located on the southwest corner of Research Medical Center. The center has its own entrance and dedicated parking adjacent to the main hospital. Parking is free and includes handicapped spaces.

BAD WEATHER DAYS: Midwest Cancer Care is generally open during inclement weather. However, if you are unable to make your appointment due to the weather, please call our office at 816-276-4700 to cancel and reschedule. Missed appointments will be added on to your treatment schedule just as snow days are added to a school year.

COMMUNICATION AFTER-HOURS: Phone calls for physicians received after 4:30 p.m, M-F and on weekends will be picked up by an answering service. Non-physician messages for Cancer Care staff can be left on the 816-276-4700 number. Simply listen for the prompts. Messages are returned the next business day.

IMPORTANT PHONE NUMBERS: During the course of your treatment, questions or concerns may arise. Please do not hesitate to stop and ask or to phone with any needs. Our office telephone number is 816-276-4700. After 4:30 p.m., the answering service will take calls and page the radiation oncologist.

LAB & X-RAY: All copies of medical records, x-rays, CT scans, MRI scans, or PET scans will be gathered by your Intake Coordinator prior to your first appointment. There may need to be routine blood tests done during the course of your therapy. Depending on your insurance requirements, the nurse will instruct you where you will have these tests done. Please check your insurance policy regarding these requirements.

BILLING & INSURANCE: The billing office is located in Richmond, Virginia, and will handle insurance filing and billing issues. Please call the Patient Financial Coordinator at Midwest Cancer Care if you have questions.

COMMUNICATION WITH YOUR OTHER DOCTORS: Being under one roof means that your physician and medical team can easily meet with each other to discuss treatment options. Multi-disciplinary conferences made up of cancer specialists meet weekly to discuss current patients’ treatment. A detailed report of these consultations is documented and sent to all involved healthcare providers. In addition to our staff team, please let us know if you have specific doctors to whom you wish copies sent.
